Integration of Hexagon’s AEON Robot Marks a New Era in iFACTORY Strategy for Intelligent Production

The global manufacturing landscape is rapidly shifting toward the era of Physical AI, where artificial intelligence transcends virtual data processing to interact directly with the physical world. BMW Group is at the forefront of this evolution, announcing the deployment of humanoid robots at its Leipzig plant in Germany. This strategic move aims to harmonize high-level flexibility with industrial-scale productivity, a cornerstone of BMW’s vision for the future of automotive production.
AEON: The Next Generation of Intelligent Co-Workers
The latest addition to the Leipzig facility is AEON, a state-of-the-art humanoid robot developed by Switzerland-based Hexagon Robotics. Unlike traditional fixed automation, AEON is designed as an “intelligent teammate” capable of sharing workspace with human employees.
Standing 1.65 meters tall and weighing 60 kg, AEON can navigate the shop floor at speeds of up to 2.5 meters per second. Its standout feature is a modular torso structure, which allows for the rapid integration of various grippers, robotic hands, or scanning devices without altering the robot’s core architecture. Following its successful debut in December 2025, BMW is executing a roadmap to move from additional testing in April 2026 to full-scale pilot operations by the summer of 2026.
Strategic Leadership and Data Architecture
The seamless operation of Physical AI is powered by a standardized data architecture that eliminates traditional data silos. By unifying its global production network under a single IT model, BMW enables real-time synchronization between digital twins, AI-driven quality inspections, and autonomous mobile robots.

Dr. Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, emphasized the strategic importance of this integration:
“The fusion of engineering expertise with artificial intelligence is the key driver in strengthening our production competitiveness on the global stage. Digitalization is not just about adopting new technology; it is a strategic necessity to ensure the resilience and agility of our manufacturing ecosystem.”
Proven Success: Insights from Spartanburg’s Figure 02 Pilot
The Leipzig deployment builds on a rigorous 10-month trial at the Spartanburg plant in the U.S. In collaboration with Figure AI, the Figure 02 robot successfully supported the production of over 30,000 BMW X3 models. Operating for more than 1,250 hours, the robot achieved millimeter-level precision in placing sheet metal parts, proving that humanoid robots can handle high-precision tasks in harsh body shop environments.

Technical Outlook: The Future of Autonomous Production
The introduction of Physical AI suggests a paradigm shift in manufacturing. Experts predict that the next phase will involve Multi-Agent Systems (MAS), where humanoid robots like AEON communicate with autonomous logistics vehicles and smart tools in a decentralized manner. This will allow production lines to self-optimize in real-time based on demand fluctuations. Furthermore, the establishment of the Physical AI Center of Competence (CoC) ensures that these innovations are not isolated but modularized for rapid global scaling across all BMW production sites.
