Honeywell (Nasdaq: HON) has introduced two innovative technologies designed to enhance safety and efficiency across the electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem. These solutions, developed by Honeywell Process Solutions and Honeywell Sensing Solutions, align with the company’s focus on megatrends such as the global energy transition.

Victor Verissimo, General Manager of Electrification for Honeywell Industrial Automation, emphasized the importance of addressing challenges in EV battery production. “As the world accelerates toward electrification, ensuring safe, efficient, and large-scale battery manufacturing is critical,” he said. “Our new technologies aim to reduce safety risks, improve transparency in battery lifecycle management, and streamline production processes, contributing to a more sustainable future.”

Titan Partnership Enhances Battery Quality Monitoring
Honeywell Process Solutions has partnered with Titan Advanced Energy Solutions, a leader in ultrasound-based battery inspection systems, to integrate its advanced scanning technology into the Honeywell Battery Manufacturing Excellence Platform (MXP). This collaboration enables real-time, in-line analysis of battery quality, identifying manufacturing defects that traditional methods might miss.

The integration of Titan’s ultrasound technology provides gigafactories with unprecedented visibility into battery cell quality, facilitating faster defect detection and process optimization. This advancement supports cost-effective, high-quality battery production at the scale required to meet growing global electrification demands.

Advanced Sensors Detect Early Signs of Battery Failure
Honeywell Sensing Solutions has launched the Battery Safety Electrolyte Sensor (BES), a groundbreaking solution for EV battery safety. Utilizing Li-ion Tamer™ electrolyte gas detection technology, the BES can identify “first vent” events—early indicators of potential battery fires—up to 5 to 20 minutes before they occur.

The BES serves as an early-warning system within EV supervisory systems, detecting gases released by failing battery cells before thermal runaway begins. This technology allows operators to take preventive measures, potentially saving lives and preventing property damage. Additionally, the BES helps automakers comply with Global Technical Regulation No. 20 and other emerging battery safety standards.

Honeywell’s latest innovations underscore its commitment to advancing the EV industry, ensuring safer and more efficient battery production and usage. These technologies are poised to play a pivotal role in the global transition to sustainable energy solutions.
