Digital manufacturing (DM) is a sub-segment of the product lifecycle management software. It improves the overall efficiency of the production by defining the optimization of manufacturing processes, managing data in the product development cycle, and supporting effective collaboration within the organization. DM software provides and supports process planning, factory modeling, visualization and simulation of operations, human factor analysis, and collaborative communication. It helps manufacturing companies to improve their production efficiency reducing production time and manufacturing expenses.
The DM market in South Korea can be segmented into seven end-user segments: aerospace and defense industry, automotive industry, electrical and electronics industry, industrial machinery industry, consumer process goods industry, utility industry, and others.
The need to test the feasibility of a product design or plant through physical prototypes has led to the adoption of augmented reality, where a product design or plan can be approved virtually rather than through physical prototypes. Augmented reality is a technology that enables the viewing of computer-generated images in a user’s field of vision. It involves scanning the physical real-world environment, which is augmented by the addition of computer-generated information. This technology can be used through applications developed for mobile devices. For instance, Ford uses augmented reality in combination with Tecnomatix to evaluate plant assembly feasibility.
According to the report, DM is an important element of PLM software. The increased use of PLM will therefore mean increased investments in DM. Many of the long-term benefits of PLM software cannot be achieved without the implementation of DM, as it facilitates the integration of PLM with other manufacturing equipment such as PLCs. In addition, it helps manufacturing companies integrate PLM tools such as CAD, CAE, PDM, and CAM with other applications or information systems. Thus, DM decides the implementation and success of PLM.
