Start-ups in the limelight at the EMO Hannover 2017

For the first time, there will be a special stand themed around “Start-ups for intelligent production” at the EMO Hannover 2017, the world’s premier trade fair for the metalworking sector, to be held from 18 to 23 September. “We aim to offer young companies venturing something new in terms of production technology a platform for marketing their innovations,” says Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director of the EMO’s organiser VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association).

The rapid pace of technical change in the field of production technology, he continues, means that new firms are set up to write software for networking machines and processes, for example, for developing new metrological procedures, implementing virtual-reality applications, or offering new close-to-industry services. They are founded as a follow-up to research projects in the universities, or a company is inaugurated on a greenfield site.

“The special stand themed around “Start-ups for intelligent production” offers a conspicuous showcase for new firms wishing to raise their profiles in an innovative business environment and break into the international market,” explains Dr. Schäfer of the VDW. It picks up on the EMO’s motto of “Connecting systems for intelligent production”, while at the same time providing a live demonstration of the opportunities opened up by new developments in the field of production technology and how they generate fresh ideas and business models. It is aimed at young firms from the field of global production technology. In offering it to them, the VDW works together with international trade associations and research partners.

BMWi supports the marketing and export of products from Germany
Inside the special stand, an area is reserved for the “Innovations made in Germany” project, which is aimed at German companies and is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). Sponsorship here is conditional upon the company’s being registered in Germany itself, the development or improvement of a product, process or a service, an annual balance sheet total of not more than 10 million euros, a payroll of at most 50 employees, and a market presence of less than ten years. If these preconditions are satisfied, 60 per cent of the fair participation costs will be met, up to a maximum of 7,500 euros per exhibitor.

“Synergies are created by this activity for the established machinery manufacturers as well, who for their part are always on the lookout for new partners with fresh ideas, in order to progress their own research and development work,” adds Dr. Schäfer. There, of course, he continues, the EMO Hannover is a superlative platform for making contacts and gain new international accounts. In addition, this goal is also supported by the EMO’s matchmaking platform for B2B meetings. Power transformers have complex internal systems that degrade over time. As a consequence, it may be necessary to inspect the internal components for signs of abnormal operation. Inspections can become more routine
The TXplore™ can assist in emergency inspections of critical transformers when operational issues are detected. TXplore™ can be deployed as soon as the transformer is de-energized. This additional data supports a more accurate evaluation of the transformer’s ability to continue to operate reliably. TXplore™ can become part of a routine periodic inspection, combined with typical oil samples analyzed for chemistry, dissolved gases and electrical tests such as ratio, power factor, SFRA and others.

This evaluation allows the transformer operator to confirm asset readiness/reliability and to use baseline data for future condition comparisons.

The need for understanding your asset condition
Power transformers are critical to moving electrical energy over long distances. They have very long service lives, typically providing reliable energy transfer for several decades. To ensure a long service life, maintenance must be carried out as the transformer ages and issues arise. The largest transformers are typically filled with mineral oil, which acts as a coolant and provides electrical insulation for the high voltages the transformer must withstand. Both the mineral oil and cellulose insulation break down from the stresses of use and aging.

The challenges of traditional inspections
In the past, to evaluate if a specific internal component or system required repairs, it was necessary for someone to perform an internal inspection of the transformer. This required bringing oil processing and storage equipment to the site and removing the oil from the transformer. An internal inspection expert would then enter the transformer and perform the inspection. All of this causes a significant outage and considerable expenses for the customer.

The internal inspection is quite challenging because spaces are tight and the environment is not human-friendly. It is also dangerous, as the confined space requires effort to ensure the air inside is breathable. The process can result in the need for extensive processing to remove gas, moisture and re-establish oil impregnation of the insulation system.

ABB has developed the TXplore™ to function as a remotely controlled inspection submarine. This allows an inspection of the transformer with minimal to no oil being removed by inserting the device through a top manhole cover. This completely eliminates the need to place a human inspector at risk and expose the transformer’s internal structure to external contaminants and potential damages from the weight of a human performing an inspection.

An on-site operator directs the TXplore™ using a wireless controller. The TXplore™ has multiple lights and highdefinition cameras that are able to provide photographs and video during the internal inspection. With local communication and support through the ABB Ability™ platform, transformer experts and customers can watch inspections in near real-time from remote locations.
This feature allows ABB to bring the experts in to help with the evaluation and remotely direct operators to look at specific areas in more detail, improving the ability to accurately identify the root cause of a problem.

The IoT Solutions World Congress 2018 introduces IoT and AI technologies workshops



From 16 to 18 October, the IoT Solutions World Congress (IoTSWC) will conduct three workshops to elaborate on aspects of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These sessions will provide knowledge and the necessary tools to optimise the digital transformation of business in different industries. Participants will receive an official certificate from the event and the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), the world’s leading organization transforming business and society by accelerating the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

The first workshop will focus on artificial intelligence and offer an overview of this technology. It will explain how it is being used successfully and where it is having a significant impact. Tips will be provided on where to start and the aspects to be taken into account during its implementation, as well as the challenges its deployment entails, depending on the company. Edy Liongosari, Chief Research Scientist at Accenture Labs, and Wael William Diab, Business and Technology Strategist at Huawei, will chair this session, with several experts in attendance.

The second workshop will demonstrate that the success of the industrial internet depends on the cooperation of different companies and will put IoT startups in contact with suppliers of solutions and financing in order to carry out these projects. Taking a practical approach, this session will enable several startups to explain the challenges they are working on and the problems they face. Several technology providers will then present solutions to contribute to resolving these challenges, as well as innovation programmes in which newly-created technology-based companies can take part. Finally, different venture capital companies will explain what they are looking for in IoT startups and outline the best way of working with them and accessing their capital injection programmes.

The last of the workshops will address the digital twin concept, which is set to transform the dynamics of the industry. This involves virtually replicating real processes in order to analyse their behaviour in certain cases, with the aims of improving their effectiveness and knowing how to act in unexpected situations. A new approach called Closed Loop PLM will be presented: CAD connections in factories and systems for the management of the product life cycle (PLM) (ALM) and (SLM) through an IoT platform which includes augmented reality and virtual reality. Those responsible for the contents are Calvin Smith, Director & Head of IoT Partner Engineering at Wipro, and Helena Lisachuck, Director IOT Global Lead at Deloitte.

The IoT Solutions World Congress (IoTSWC) is the leading event on the industrial internet and the digital transformation of business sectors, combining a congress, a commercial exhibition and test benches. The October edition expects to gather together 300 exhibitors and 250 speakers from around the world. This year’s show is set to showcase the growth of the IoT and its widescale implementation across a range of industrial and business applications and will also demonstrate the convergence of this technology with artificial intelligence and blockchain. More than 13,000 professionals from 114 countries visited the IoTSWC last year.
